Newfoundland Rock arrived at Twin Elm Rugby Park prepared to play their first match of the RCSL season against the Ottawa Harlequins. 200 fans came out for the Friday evening match in spite of weather reports promising showers. As it turned out there was only an occasional drizzle during the game.
Sustained pressure from the Rock resulted in a try by hooker Owen Parfrey. No conversion. Rock - 5 Ottawa – 0.
Grant Moffett touched down for the Rock’s second try. No conversion. Score Rock – 10 Ottawa - 0. A huge overlap allowed Grant Moffett to score his second try. Again no conversion. Score Rock – 15 Ottawa - 0. Great passing led to another try by Greg Moffett. This time the convert was good. Rock - 22 Ottawa — 0.
Then good pressure from the Harlequins lead to an Ottawa try by fullback Robin MacLachlan. Convert by Chris Miller. Score Rock – 22 Ottawa – 7. Classy Ottawa passing got the ball to hooker Will Thompson who made no mistake touching down between the uprights. Convert by Chris Miller. Rock – 22 Ottawa - 14.
The Rock responded with a try by Ken Goodland. No convert. Score Rock – 27 Ottawa - 14. Continued forward pressure by the Rock allowed Ken Goodland to score again. Convert by Mike Rudefski. Score Rock – 34 Ottawa - 14. The Rock’s Grant Moffett scored again in the corner. No convert. Score Rock –39 Ottawa – 14. More pressure from a sturdy Rock pack and Canada flanker Mike Webb touched down for the last Newfoundland try of the game. No conversion. Final score Rock – 44 Ottawa - 14.
